Various methods are useful in finding beetles in the region. I regularly run a black light set-up in the warm months right on my patio (as shown to the left). As the weeks and months pass, a succession of beetle species make their appearances at the white sheet. Hiking the roads and trails of the area is an excellent way to find beetles, also, especially at different elevations at as many different times of the year as possible. Searching under logs, rocks and debris is always productive, too. I have done some limited attraction of beetles with bait and traps, as well as by beating vegetation, which yields species that might not be easily observed otherwise.
